Next, pull the chain through the front derailleur cage and around the bottom bracket don't place it on the small chainring yet. So, who is actually Trek ? A better equipped version of the same series, and a doorway to the mid-level segment, or at least, a bike daring to attack it? There are no significant differences between the and frames except for decals. In fact, same as for his younger sibling, the agility of Trek is diminished by the position of the highly placed handlebar.
However, for the other side of story, those who appreciate a more comfortable position will be quite pleased with this position. If you want a sportier ride you just have to remove one or both spacers placed on the steerer tube and place them above the stem.

So, this bike really has some racing pedigree! As I said above, the is an upgrade to the model in terms of specs. Even though the most expensive bikes are the ones that attract the most attention of enthusiasts, it is usually the mid-range to low-range bikes that bring the more money to a company. And this is the case with the Trek — a mid-range bicycle which everyone loves. The Trek is merely an all-rounder, a bike that will please almost every biker without problems.
It offers everything everyone wants — the perfect comfy design, high-quality hardware, reliability, and top-notch performance both in trails and on the road.
However, the bike is not perfect. Even though it is one of the most sought for bikes for its mid-range cost — it is still not the best. But overall, it is a bike worthy of analysis. Any experienced biker who has tried the Trek knows that maybe the trickiest part of the bike was the V-brakes. However, sinceTrek started to make the model slightly different — and the change was, of course, mainly on the brakes.
Sincethe company started using Shimano Hydraulic Discs brakes instead of the V-brakes from before. Especially in wet roads, the Trek was usually unreliable. With the change, however, all this changed. The improved brakes made the Trek one of the best bikes out there, fixing may be the only problem the most serious fans could mention about the bike.
Especially if you were a beginner in mountaineering, you would feel like this size was just perfect. Getting a Trek and being inexperienced was seemingly the best formula to enjoy a fun time at beginner-level mountaineering. Being smaller in size improved the overall handling and agility the bike had on the road. During the hardest of paths, even, the small size of the wheels alongside the tires made it incredibly reliable nonetheless. When you look at the components of the Trekyou could see how well-made a mid-range bike could be.

This past winter the local bike shop custom-built one bike for me and entirely rebuilt two of my other bikes. After spending so much time in the bike shop I finally decided I would try to rebuild the Trek myself.
With the help of the guys at the bike shop I bought all new parts for the rebuild. The only items that did not need replacing were the wheels. I have two sets of wheels for this bike anyway—one with snow tires and the other with aggressive knobby tires. Since the Trek was an entry-level bike it came with fairly inexpensive parts, but the aluminum frame has a lifetime warranty. When I did the rebuild I decided to move a few levels up the Shimano product line for most of the parts so I would end up with a better bike than I had to begin with.
Before you can start rebuilding a bike you have to remove all the old parts first. Since this bike had suffered through ten Chicago winters it is not surprising that all the parts were highly corroded. When I took the old parts off the bike I kept the cable housings so I could cut new housings to the same size.
The hardest thing to get off the bike was the city sticker—the town I live in requires all bikes to have a sticker to help the police find the owner in case of theft. I am not sure what the sticker was made of, but it took me over an hour to get it off the bike! Once all the old parts were off I used Turtle Wax Premium Grade Rubbing Compound on the frame to remove scratches in the paint and Brasso metal polish to clean the chrome.
One item that I was not able to get off the bike was the bottom bracket—ten years of road salt made it very difficult to remove, so I had the guys at the bike shop replace it for me. The bike shop has a bottom bracket tool that can apply a lot more leverage than I was able to apply. They put on a maintenance free Shimano BB-UN55 Bottom Bracket with sealed bearings and a high quality spindle that should last for many years.
This crankset came with a chain guard and is much lighter than the set I had on before. The next items installed were a pair of Shimano Acera V-Brakes —the mud guard on these brakes was another nice improvement from the original brake set. There were three other items I added that were not absolutely necessary, but I thought were nice finishing touches. The last item was a Lizard Skins Jumbo Chainstay Guard —a neoprene cover that fits over the chainstay to keep the paint from chipping and stop the noise caused by chain slaps.
Trek after the rebuild on the shores of Lake Michigan. Like most cyclists I enjoy riding and believe that bike repair is best done by trained professionals. One of the reasons I wanted to do this rebuild myself was for my education. Rebuilding a bike will teach you a lot about basic bicycle mechanics and once you do it you will feel a lot more confident about making a roadside repair when your bike breaks down 40 miles away from home.
I purchased all the parts for this rebuild from the local bike shop. I could have saved a few dollars by buying the parts online, but the local bike shop was very helpful in making sure I had the right parts. If you are one of those people who finds the parts you want at a local store and then buys them online to save money, well, I think you are lower than pond scum.

Trek 4900 Mountain Bike Review
I am already wanting do rebuild another bike, but all of mine are now in perfect condition. Maybe I need to go to the bike auction our local Police Dept. Me Too! Great job! Now you are an expert.This is a sturdy, inexpensive mountain bike that should be good for several years of riding. The components are nothing special, just servicable. It should be great for casual trail riding. If you get into racing or taking long rides, you'll probably want to upgrade.
You don't mention what condition it is in, how it has been serviced or how many folks have owned it. It depends on what you are looking for. It is considered a higher-end entry level mountain bike. It probably retailed new around dollars. I'm guessing the bike is at least years old, so I would only pay dollars depending on condition.
This bike will handle pretty much any trail you go on. It is a very sturdy and solid bike. The only negative thing that I noticed was that the fork was very stiff. I'm a fairly heavy rider lbs and still rarely got full travel out of the fork. Not the smoothest of rides.
All in all though, a good entry-level bike. If used, I would suggest having the bike looked over by a bike shop to see how much money would be required for general maintenance.
