Using SMR technology instead of conventional magnetic recording allows HDD manufacturers to put out denser drives at cheaper prices. While that also sounds like a win for consumers, these drives are not suitable for NAS environments due to their slow write speeds, with SMR being particularly concerning if not disclosed in the product documentation. Among the recently discovered companies using SMR without informing customers, it was easier to overlook Seagate and Toshiba models as they weren't being marketed as NAS drives.

They are great for sharing and backing up files using one to eight drive bays and for a workload rate of TB a year. Nonetheless, it has now followed up with a complete list of SMR models that should certainly help alleviate concerns and make it easier for users to decide on their next purchase.

Unsurprisingly, SMR is present across several other WD model lineups, and the company says that it will update its marketing materials accordingly and will also share drive benchmarks and their ideal use cases in the future. In context: WD, Seagate, and Toshiba were recently found - and acknowledged - using slower shingled magnetic recording SMR technology in some of their hard drives, without mentioning the spec in their product documentation.

The company is now being more upfront about the issue and has published the complete list of drives using SMR to clear out the confusion and help customers in deciding with their purchase. Until recently, the technology has only been seen in very large disks, which were typically clearly marked as "archival". Storage vendors appear to be getting much bolder about deploying the new technology into ever-smaller formats, presumably to save a bit on manufacturing costs. A few weeks ago, a message popped up on the zfs-discuss mailing list:. There has been speculation that the drives got kicked out of the arrays due to long timeouts—SMR disks need to perform garbage-collection routines in the background and store incoming writes in a small CMR-encoded write-cache area of the disk, before moving them to the main SMR encoded storage.

It's possible that long periods of time with no new writes accepted triggered failure-detection routines that marked the disk as bad. In the weeks since this issue first began cropping up on mailing lists, Western Digital has responded differently in different venues. The same user who reported difficulties in the zfs-discuss list opened a smartmontools ticket and reported an emailed response from Yemi Elegunde, an enterprise and channel sales manager for Western Digital UK:.

Just a quick note. The only SMR drive that Western Digital will have in production is our 20TB hard enterprise hard drives and even these will not be rolled out into the channel.

With SMR Western Digital would make it very clear as that format of hard drive requires a lot of technological tweaks in customer systems. The Problem with PMR Scalability Engineers are running into difficulty scaling drive capacity using PMR due to physical limitations inherent in the current recording process. As areal density is increased on a drive platter, the size of a bit on the media is decreased. To maintain sufficient signal-to-noise ratio SNR to read, manufacturers must decrease the grain size on the media.

That in turn causes the energy barrier for flipping the bit to decrease since the volume of the material holding the bit decreases. A low energy barrier means that ambient thermal energy is more likely to flip the bit, reducing data integrity. In order to strengthen the energy barrier, coercivity of the material must be increased to mitigate the risk of flipped magnetization. This is an issue however as manufacturers try to reduce the size of the write head to enable more tracks on a platter.

A smaller write head means a smaller write field and the industry is at the point where the smaller write field is becoming insufficient to change the magnetization on the media, preventing the write from occurring.

The larger writer means it can more effectively magnetize write the media without having to compromise readability or stability retention. As noted, PMR tracks are laid out in parallel around the surface of the media as seen below.

As a result, a management or translation layer needs to be created to take random writes and convert them to sequential writes. Thus, the tracks partially overlap similar to roof shingles. This approach was selected because physical limitations prevent recording magnetic heads from having the same width as reading heads, leaving recording heads wider. The overlapping-tracks architecture complicates the writing process since writing to one track also overwrites an adjacent track. If adjacent tracks contain valid data, they must be rewritten as well.

As a result, SMR drives are divided into many append-only sequential zones of overlapping tracks that need to be rewritten entirely when full, resembling flash blocks in solid state drives. Device-managed SMR devices hide this complexity by managing it in the firmware, presenting an interface like any other hard disk. Other SMR devices are host-managed and depend on the operating system to know how to handle the drive, and only write sequentially to certain regions of the drive.

There are three different ways that data can be managed on an SMR drive: [14] [15]. A Device Managed or Drive Managed drive appears to the host identically to a non-shingled drive. It is not necessary for the host to follow any special protocols. All handling of data, as it relates to the shingled nature of the storage, is managed by the device.

Sequential writes are more efficient. In addition, the host is unaware that the storage is shingled. This type of SMR drive is often not labelled by the manufacturer. Its firmware-controlled shingle translation layer operation can be compared to solid state drivesas LBA addresses do not correlate much to on-disk structure. The append-only zones are very slow for random writing, so writes are first sent to a PMR cache, and the disk moves these data to SMR parts when idle.

Both behaviors tend to be interpreted as drive failure by the RAID controller. The zoned nature of SMR also means that the disk suffers from write amplification when garbage collecting[17] although for hard drives the main problem with writes is speed instead of longevity.

Joined Feb 15, Messages 16, Just a heads-up: I converted this thread into a Resource. The thread will continue as the discussion thread for the resource, but I left the table out of the first post to avoid having two copies that might get out of sync.

Joined May 29, Messages 12, Oh hahaha I literally just threw a report at you a few minutes ago asking you to make it into a resource. One method, though it will take a long time, would be to write 1TB of zeros.

The amount here could be reduced, depending on drive and CMR size. As this test would only need to be run once for any given manufacturer's model, I am not too concerned about the amount of time it takes.
